Soul Training

Spiritual Skill: Humanity (wk. 2/13)

“The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God… but the person with the Spirit makes judgments about all things.” (1 Corinthians 2:14-15)

In the gym, the best athletes still need a coach. Not just someone to correct their form, but someone who sees their potential, guides their growth, and pushes them further than they thought they could go. Coaching is more than shouting cues and counting reps — it’s a relationship built on trust and transformation. You show up, you listen, and over time, you get better.

When it comes to spiritual fitness, we need coaching too — we need coaching for our soul. Humanity is God’s greatest creation, and within every person is a spiritual side that needs training. The soul isn’t shaped by self-discipline alone. It’s shaped through a relationship with the Holy Spirit, who acts as our personal spiritual coach. In 1 Corinthians 2, Paul explains that the deep things of God are revealed not by human wisdom but by the Spirit. We can’t train our soul by guesswork or willpower — we train it by listening to the Spirit and responding to His voice.

The Holy Spirit teaches us how to think, how to see, how to respond. He doesn’t just coach us to do better — He reveals who we really are in Christ and how to live from that identity. Soul training isn’t about behavior modification. It’s about heart transformation. And just like a good coach doesn’t give you a pass on tough workouts, the Spirit won’t lead you around challenge or discomfort. He leads you through it. That’s where strength is built.

So how do we train our soul? We show up. We listen. We respond. That might look like taking quiet time to reflect instead of reacting. It might mean diving into Scripture even when it’s confusing or inconvenient. It might be sitting in conviction rather than brushing it off. Soul training is slower than physical training — but it’s deeper. It shapes your thoughts, your decisions, and ultimately your character.

If humanity is God’s greatest creation, then our soul is the engine room. And the Holy Spirit is the only One qualified to coach it. Let Him lead. Let Him challenge. Let Him transform you from the inside out. Spiritual strength doesn’t start at the surface. It starts in the soul — and it’s built through soul training.

Questions for Reflection:

How has God’s Spirit coached you lately?

Do you struggle more with listening to God’s Spirit or responding to Him?
