Consistency

Spiritual Essential: Obedience

“To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams.” (1 Samuel 15:22)

In the gym, consistency beats intensity every time. You can have one incredible workout, go all out, leave it all on the floor — but if you disappear for the next two weeks, nothing changes. Growth doesn’t come from occasional effort. It comes from showing up, day after day, rep after rep.

That’s the lesson King Saul missed in 1 Samuel 15.

God gave Saul a clear command. But instead of fully obeying, Saul went with his own plan. He kept some of what God told him to destroy and then tried to cover it with sacrifice. On the surface, it looked spiritual. It looked like he was offering something meaningful to God. But underneath, it was disobedience.

And God’s response is clear: obedience is better than sacrifice.

We define obedience as responding to God’s Word and will with trust and action, showing love through submission. And what God is after isn’t partial effort or religious performance — He’s after a heart that consistently says “yes” to Him.

So why does God desire obedience over religious ritual?

Because obedience is relational. It’s not about what you bring — it’s about how you respond. Sacrifice can be external. It can be something you give without actually surrendering your heart. But obedience requires trust. It requires alignment. It requires you to follow, even when it doesn’t make sense.

It’s like the athlete who wants results but skips the program. They might add extra work, do what they enjoy, or push hard in random ways — but they’re not following the plan. And without consistency, there’s no real progress.

God isn’t asking for random bursts of effort. He’s asking for steady, faithful obedience. The daily reps of choosing His way over your own. The quiet decisions no one sees. The moments where you follow through, not because it’s easy, but because you trust Him.

Here’s the truth: showing up and doing what God asks is worth more than trying to make up for it later.

So take inventory. Where is God calling you to obey — not eventually, not partially, but fully?

Because in your spiritual life, it’s not about what you’re willing to give up occasionally. It’s about how consistently you’re willing to follow Jesus.

And that’s where real growth happens — in consistency.

Questions for Reflection:

Where do you struggle with consistency in your spiritual life?

Where is God calling you trust Him right now?
