Follow Through

Spiritual Essential: Obedience

“If you love me, keep my commands.” (John 14:15)

Everybody loves the idea of fitness. But not everybody loves the process.

It’s easy to sign up for a gym membership, buy new shoes, or tell your friends you’re going to get in shape. It’s much harder to show up on a cold morning when your alarm goes off at 5:00 a.m. It’s one thing to say you want to train. It’s another thing entirely to actually train.

In fitness, we have a phrase for this: follow through.

Follow through is what separates intention from action. Plenty of athletes talk about their goals. Successful athletes build their lives around them. They do the workouts they said they would do. They stick to the nutrition plan they committed to. They keep showing up long after the excitement wears off. Their actions prove what matters most to them.

Jesus says something similar in John 14. He doesn’t say, “If you love me, tell me.” He doesn’t say, “If you love me, sing about me.” He says, “If you love me, keep my commands.” In other words, love is demonstrated through obedience.

We define obedience as responding to God’s Word and will with trust and action, showing love through submission. Notice that obedience isn’t simply hearing God’s instructions. It’s responding to them. It’s taking what God says and putting it into practice.

This is why obedience is the truest expression of our love for God. Anyone can make a declaration. Anyone can have good intentions. Love becomes real when it moves from words into action.

Think about the moments in life when obedience requires the most trust. Forgiving someone who hurt you. Being generous when money feels tight. Choosing honesty when a lie would be easier. Loving someone who is difficult to love. In those moments, we’re not simply following rules. We’re telling God, “I trust You more than I trust myself.”

That’s what follow through looks like spiritually.

The beautiful promise in this passage is that obedience doesn’t create distance between us and God. It creates intimacy. Jesus says those who keep His commands are the ones who love Him, and those who love Him will experience His presence in a deeper way. Obedience becomes an invitation into relationship.

So, take inventory today. What has God asked you to do? What commitment have you made that still needs action behind it? Don’t settle for good intentions. Put your faith into motion.

Because in the gym and in the spiritual life, growth belongs to those who follow through.

Questions for Reflection:

When has God’s love compelled you to follow through?

How has obedience created intimacy in your relationships?
