Spiritual Essential: Sacrifice
“I will not sacrifice to the Lord my God burnt offerings that cost me nothing.” (2 Samuel 24:24)
Every athlete knows there is a price for progress.
Strength costs time. Endurance costs effort. Performance costs comfort. Nobody accidentally becomes fit. Every improvement requires giving something up. Early mornings replace sleeping in. Meal prep replaces convenience. Mobility replaces another night on the couch. The athlete who grows is the athlete willing to pay the cost.
The same is true spiritually. Spiritual strength requires spiritual sacrifice.
We define sacrifice as surrendering something we value for something of greater worth in God’s eyes. The key word in that definition is value. Sacrifice isn’t giving away what doesn’t matter. It’s releasing something we care about because we trust God has something better.
That’s exactly what we see in 2 Samuel 24. When King David is offered the land and animals he needs for a sacrifice free of charge, he refuses. His response is powerful: “I will not sacrifice to the Lord my God burnt offerings that cost me nothing.” David understood something many people miss. If there is no cost, there is no sacrifice.
Why does sacrifice require giving up what we value?
Because surrendering something meaningful changes us.
In the gym, there are moments during every difficult workout when you must decide whether the goal is worth the discomfort. When your heart is beating out of your chest or your muscles feel like they’re on fire, the meaningful thing you value is making the pain go away. But when you choose to surrender the desire to quit, you remember pain has a purpose. The fitness on the other side of the pain is worth more than stopping just because it’s hard.
God uses sacrifice in much the same way.
When we surrender our time, our plans, our resources, our preferences, or our comfort, we experience the pain of letting go. But that pain creates space for something greater. It deepens our trust. It strengthens our faith. It helps us discover that God’s purposes are better than our own.
The beautiful truth about sacrifice is that God never asks us to give up something we consider valuable without offering something far greater in return. We exchange temporary things for eternal ones. We surrender what we can hold in our hands for what God can shape in our hearts.
So, what is God asking you to place on the altar today? What are you holding onto because the cost feels too high?
Remember, the value of a sacrifice is found in what it costs. And when you trust God enough to surrender what you treasure, you’ll discover what He gives in return is worth far more than what you gave up.
That’s the nature of sacrifice. That’s the reality of following Jesus. And that’s why every meaningful sacrifice has a cost.
Questions for Reflection:
What has following Jesus cost you?
What is God calling you to sacrifice in this season? Where is that creating tension?
