Mile Markers

Spiritual Essential: Endurance

“Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.” (Hebrews 12:1–2)

Anyone who has ever trained for a long-distance event knows the importance of mile markers. When you’re running a marathon, you don’t focus on all 26.2 miles at once. If you do, the finish line feels impossibly far away. Instead, you focus on the next marker. Mile 3. Mile 8. Mile 15.  Each marker reminds you that you’re making progress. It gives you something concrete to focus on when your legs are tired and your mind starts telling you to quit.

Mile markers are focal points of endurance. The same is true in our spiritual life.

We define endurance as the ability to remain faithful through hardship, building spiritual strength. And one of the greatest challenges to endurance isn’t weakness — it’s distraction. When hardship comes, it’s easy to focus on how far we still have to go, how difficult the journey feels, or how exhausted we’ve become. That’s why Hebrews 12 calls us to fix our eyes on Jesus now.

So how do we stay fixed on Jesus in the race of life?

God often gives us spiritual mile markers.

Sometimes a mile marker is a prayer He answered. Sometimes it’s a Scripture that carried us through a difficult season. Other times, it’s a friendship, a breakthrough, or a reminder of His faithfulness when we needed it most. These moments don’t replace the finish line, but they help us keep moving toward it.

In the gym, every workout has checkpoints. Maybe it’s reaching the halfway point of a long run. Maybe it’s completing another round of a grueling workout. Maybe it’s adding five pounds to the bar after weeks of training. Those markers don’t mean the work is finished, but they remind you that the work is working.

God does the same thing in our faith journey.

When we look back and remember His faithfulness, we gain confidence for the road ahead. When we remember how He carried us through a previous trial, we’re better equipped to trust Him in the current one. Every spiritual mile marker becomes evidence that God is still leading, still working, and still worthy of our trust.

The ultimate focus, however, is not the marker — it’s Jesus. Markers simply point us back to Him. They remind us that the One who started our race is the One who will finish it.

So, when the road feels long, don’t stare at the finish line until you’re overwhelmed. Look for the evidence of God’s faithfulness. Remember where He’s met you before. Celebrate the progress He’s already made in you.

Because endurance requires focus, and God has given you spiritual mile markers to help you keep your eyes on Jesus.
