Spiritual Essential: Discipline
“Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:32)
Freedom isn’t the first thing most people think of when they hear the word discipline. In fact, it sounds almost contradictory. Discipline sounds like rules, structure, sweat, and sacrifice. Freedom sounds like rest, ease, flexibility, and space. But anyone who’s trained for more than a few weeks knows the truth — discipline leads to freedom. It’s unexpected, but it’s real.
In the gym, we see it all the time. The person who commits to consistent training — who shows up, follows the plan, and puts in the reps — doesn’t get more restricted. They get more capable. They move better. They recover faster. They have more energy, less pain, more control. They can say “yes” to more in life — hikes, adventures, long days on their feet — because discipline unlocked that freedom. The daily grind created unexpected abundance.
Jesus says the same is true for our spiritual lives.
In John 8, Jesus tells His followers that if they hold to His teaching — stay consistent, committed, dialed in — then they are truly His disciples. And what happens next? “Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” It’s not freedom by accident. It’s freedom through discipline. We define discipline as the consistent training and refining God uses to shape us into the image of Jesus. And Jesus is clear — that kind of training brings us into abundant life.
So how does consistent spiritual discipline free us to live abundantly? It clears the clutter. It cuts the noise. It aligns us with truth. When we consistently pursue God — through prayer, Bible reading, meditation, stillness, sacrifice, and the like — we begin to live without the same weight of fear, comparison, pride, or distraction. We’re not as easily tossed by every emotion or circumstance. We know who we are in Christ. We know God’s truth. And that kind of clarity leads to a life that’s not just free — it’s full.
You were made for more than reacting to life as it comes. You were made to live rooted in truth, strengthened by grace, and led by the Spirit. But that life doesn’t come randomly. It comes through daily, often quiet, always powerful discipline. The more consistently you show up, the more you’ll see — God isn’t holding you back. He’s setting you free.
That’s the power of discipline. And it’s beautifully, undeniably unexpected.
